DyCare Lynx: functional assessment of any movement

Lynx is the first innovative solution developed by DyCare that is revolutionising the rehabilitation field. It uses movement sensors and an intuitive software to carry out the functional assessment of joints. Rehabilitation professionals can carry out a quick, safe and precise assessment of the patient’s functional status.

What is DyCare Lynx?

Our first product, DyCare Lynx, responds to a specific need: Silvia and Ricardo were undergoing physical rehabilitation simultaneously, and when they shared their experiences, they realised that there was no direct way of knowing how they had progressed or if their treatment was working.

A medical goniometer is a device used by rehabilitation professionals to measure the range of motion in the joints of their patients. While this traditional apparatus was very useful for many years, today it is considered an obsolete tool that can present a wide margin of error in the readings obtained. An alternative suggested by some professionals is the installation of camera systems – known as mocap or motion capture systems – which capture movements more precisely, but this is a very expensive solution. Taking into account current market needs, DyCare decided to take a technological leap and look for an intermediate solution that was more objective, portable and inexpensive: DyCare Lynx.

Lynx is composed of wearable sensors that are applied on the part of the body being treated. The specialist guides the patient’s movements, which are recorded in real time by the software to which the sensors are connected: how the joint is moving, the degrees of motion and speed of movement.

In a radio interview for the “La tarda de Barcelona” programme on Betevé 91.0 fm, DyCare’s CTO Ricardo explained that, “In less than two minutes, the professional obtains the same results as with a goniometer, but with additional data, new parameters that allow them to conduct a more thorough analysis and a database that allows them to measure the patient’s progress more easily.

 How does it work?

Lynx carries out an evaluation of movement in three easy steps using an innovative software that is fast, easy to use and intuitive:

  1. Capture of the movement: the movement made by the patient is captured by two sensors, or four if simultaneously capturing the movement in a healthy and a pathological joint to compare performance.
  2. Automatic 3D analysis: the data is recorded in real time and allows a precise analysis of joint movement to be performed in 3D. This helps to detect any movement compensations, which occur when the affected joint forces another part of the body when it moves, which could lead to that part also becoming damaged or injured.
  3. Creation of the report: Lynx generates an in-depth, intuitive report that can be shared with the patient and/or other specialists and be saved in the patient’s medical history.

A professional opinion

Doctor Andrés Alcázar, Director of Healthcare Services in the medical insurance company Maz, affirms that Lynx is a very straightforward method. In the radio interview mentioned above, he stated that, “constant interaction with the rehabilitation professional is an important advantage.” He adds: “the graphs that are being stored are easy to read and the patients themselves can see how they are progressing with their treatment.
