Fabrizio Gravina, physical therapist at the Ergodynamic biomechanics centre, uses DyCare technology for musculoskeletal evaluation in the rehabilitation of sportsmen and women. In this article, he tells us about his experience with Lynx.
DyCare interviews Fabrizio Gravina, trainer and physical therapist
- Why did you decide to test the Lynx solution at your centre?
In a physical rehabilitation program it is very important to constantly follow the patient’s evolution: the quality of movement, the range of joints, and of course, the force it is able to generate with movement. For this, it is necessary to have a technological support that allows us to quantify all these data, that is as reliable as possible and that also facilitates our work. We decided to try Lynx because we value the quality of the data it collects and the speed at which it stores them.
- What applications does Lynx have in the sports rehabilitation process?
One of the most striking functions of the device is to be able to observe the quality of the movement throughout the data collection. Lynx makes it possible to observe the angle of movement in a very concrete way, and how the patient moves the injured joint from a more general point of view. Being able to observe the set of data in different planes gives us an analytical view of the joint action in order to achieve, in this way, a more effective analysis of the functionality and stability of the joint in each movement.
- What differentiates Lynx from other measurement systems?
The difference we observed with respect to other types of instrumentation is the software, which allows the professional to collect all the data accurately and in maximum detail. It enables as well to segment each data, the study of the different planes and the capacity to generate reports. In addition, the data is easy to read and interpret by other professionals and by the patient, not only in the final report but also during the entire data collection process.
Compared to other types of solutions, Lynx collects data on medical validity, an important advantage in order to guarantee all patients a quality report from a medical-clinical point of view.
- What is the opinion of the patients during the evaluation process? What about the other specialists with whom you share the results?
We observe that patients are very happy with this type of evaluation because it gives them a quick perception of how they are progressing. We use the device not only from a point of view of punctual data collection, but also from a training point of view. It is important that the instrumentation that we implement day by day generates a biofeedback that allows us to see the progression at the moment. Several studies affirm that, if there is a visible biofeedback, the patient’s recovery is faster and the patient is more involved in the rehabilitation process.
For the entire multidisciplinary team involved in the patient’s rehabilitation process, the data collected by Lynx are essential for decision-making and the creation of a recovery exercise program. The information observed and shared by all the professionals (traumatologist, rehabilitation doctor and physiotherapist) makes it easier for us to choose the most appropriate strategy.
- Would you recommend the use of the device to other physical rehabilitation centres?
I think it is important that, little by little, all professionals involved in the rehabilitation of injuries have the maximum instrumentation at our disposal. In addition to improving the recovery process, all the data generated with this technology also gives us a common language when it comes to interpreting human movement. For this reason, I would advise Lynx to all professionals in the sector.
